The next “Friend Book” event will feature philosopher and lecturer Sergio Givone, who will present his latest book “Reasonable hope. How philosophers have thought about the afterlife. ” (Solferino, 2025). The event will be held on Wednesday, March 5, at 11 a.m. at the Adventist Institute Conference Room, 8 Ellen Gould White Street, Florence.
Accompanying the author in the discussion will be Mariella Orsi, sociologist and former Vice-Chair of the Regional Bioethics Commission. The interview will be conducted by Hanz Gutierrez, professor at the Adventist Faculty of Theology.
Givone’s book addresses a fascinating and deeply human topic: philosophical reflection on the afterlife. Through the thought of great philosophers, the author explores the concept of hope in relation to existence and transcendence. What is the meaning of hope for modern man? How have philosophers tried to provide answers to this question over the centuries? The text guides the reader through a journey through the ideas of thinkers such as Plato, Augustine, Kant and Heidegger, offering a broad and accessible overview of a topic that is as complex as it is universal.
The event will be open to the public and also available for streaming on the Adventist Institute’s Facebook page, allowing a wide audience to participate in the discussion. A unique opportunity to dialogue with a great contemporary thinker and explore the relationship between philosophy and spirituality.
The meeting is part of the “Friendly Book” series of events, promoted by CeCSUR (Cultural Center for Human and Religious Sciences) in collaboration with the Adventist Faculty of Theology. The initiative aims to stimulate cultural and philosophical debate, offering moments of reflection on topical issues.
