Celsus, a 2nd-century Medo-Platonic philosopher, considered attacking Christians by mocking them as “lovers of the body” and apostrophized the Christian hope in the resurrection of the flesh as a “worm’s hope.”
Precisely through the caustic critique of this ancient philosopher, one could speculatively argue that Christianity is really the religion of the body, or the religion of a body.
This assertion, however, conflicts with an equally robust disenchantment with the body that has characterized Christianity until recent times. What relationship then between the body, in its many meanings and limitations, and the Christian faith?
