Book Friend: “The Democracy of the Void. The West between Populism and Neoliberalism” by Emanuela Fornari

On Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., a new appointment of Libro Amico will be held. The guest of the meeting will be Emanuela Fornari, professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Roma Tre, who will present her volume “La democrazia del vuoto. The West between Populism and Neoliberalism” (Castelvecchi, 2023).

The book offers a careful analysis of the transformations of contemporary Western democracy, highlighting how the combination of populism and neoliberalism is contributing to a progressive hollowing out of democratic processes. In a global context characterized by political instability and civic disaffection, Fornari reflects on new power arrangements and the crisis of representative institutions, questioning the future prospects of democracy.

Interviewing the author will be Hanz Gutierrez, a lecturer at the Adventist Faculty of Theology, who will lead the dialogue delving into the main themes of the book and stimulating discussion with the audience.

The meeting will be held in-person at the Adventist Institute headquarters, located at 8 Ellen Gould White Street, Florence. For those who cannot be present in the hall, the event will be streamed live on the Adventist Institute’s Facebook page, providing an opportunity for a wider audience to follow the discussion and participate virtually.

The initiative is sponsored by CeCSUR (Cultural Center for Humanities and Religious Studies), in collaboration with the Adventist University Institute and the Adventist Faculty of Theology, with support from the Adventist 8×1000.
