Book Fellow: “Toward and Islamic Theology of Nonviolence. In Dialogue with René Girard” by Adnane Mokrani

On Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 11 a.m., the appointment with Libro Amico, the cultural initiative that promotes discussion on relevant texts and current issues, returns. This time the focus will be on a work that explores the theme of nonviolence in the Islamic context: “Toward an Islamic Theology of Nonviolence. In Dialogue with René Girard” (Michigan State University Press, 2022).

The author of the volume, Adnane Mokrani, a professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, will be the guest speaker at the event to explore his work and discuss the implications of nonviolence in contemporary Islamic thought. Accompanying him in the reflection will be Hanz Gutierrez, who will enrich the dialogue with his critical contribution.

Mokrani’s work proposes an innovative reading of the concept of nonviolence from an Islamic perspective, relating it to the thought of René Girard, known for his theory of mimetic desire and sacrificial violence. This approach opens new perspectives for understanding interfaith dialogue and peace dynamics in multicultural societies.

The meeting provides an important opportunity to reflect on how the principles of nonviolence can be interpreted and applied in different religious contexts, offering food for thought not only for scholars of theology but also for anyone interested in issues of coexistence and dialogue between cultures.

The event will be held in-person at the Adventist Institute, 8 Ellen Gould White Street, Florence. It will also be available for live streaming at http://hopemedia.it/istituto-avventista and on our Facebook page.
