1-DAY TRIP
Five Lands
The Cinque Terre are five colorful fishing villages linked by walking trails on the Italian Riviera. Together with the surrounding hills and sea they form the Cinque Terre National Park and are designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. During the Medieval Ages, these small villages served as defenses for the Ligurian interior. Then during the sixteenth-century towers and fortifications were built against pirate attacks.
By train, you can arrive at the first of the 5 villages: Riomaggiore. Then by following the Via dell’Amore you can reach Manarola on foot before going on to explore Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. Be sure to bring your swimsuit as there is nothing more refreshing than jumping into the sparkling sea in between hiking. As you will surely work up an appetite, some local specialties to try include olive oil, focaccia, pesto, and farinata, a savory snack made from chickpea flour.
